Smart Energy Systems Program

New subsidy scheme soon available to accelerate Smart Energy Systems innovations

In the light of the Rotterdam Climate Agreement (https://www.rotterdaminnovationcity.com/News/rotterdam-halves-C02/) and the Roadmap Next Economy (https://www.roadmapnexteconomy.com), the city of Rotterdam wants to accelerate the roll-out and upscaling of smart energy system innovations to commercial applications by supporting 10 to 15 projects.

Developing a robust, sustainable and flexible energy system is crucial for Rotterdam. This requires intelligent networks for decentralized power generation, transport and use, digital services and business models that coordinate supply and demand in a smarter way, temporary energy storage solutions, and innovations that ensure grid balance and prevent congestion.

For medium-sized investments, the costs of a thorough feasibility study or an experimental pilot are relatively high. Promising innovations unnecessarily remain on the shelf while the technology is available.

To solve this, the city of Rotterdam offers the Subsidy Scheme Innovative Solutions Smart Energy Systems. The grant is intended for feasibility studies and experimental development of innovations in the energy system. The city of Rotterdam provides a subsidy of up to 50% of the costs of a feasibility study or 25% of the costs of an experimental development. Maximum subsidy granted amounts to a maximum of €100,000.

About the program

The scope of the program is wide. Innovations can be geared towards industry, the commercial sector, households or related sectors such as transport. Applications with an intended investment decision in the period 2020-2022 are preferred. Special attention is given to the relationship with Rotterdam, size and scalability or replicability potential.

Interested parties can submit their applications online from August 1st, 2020 to October 1st, 2020. This can be done as of 1th August via the application form at https://www.rotterdam.nl/loket/subsidie-smart-energy-systems. The municipality of Rotterdam allocates the subsidy based on the assessment of the social impact, feasibility and financial parameters. If desired, the program also provides support with a specific technical, financial or organizational nature, or with improving a business case.
