Built Environment

Rotterdam is a dynamic city under constant construction. For the built environment, Rotterdam balances the importance of sustainability and productivity.

Rotterdam opts for good growth. Growth that contributes to the well-being of the inhabitants and visitors, to a sustainable society and to economic progress. Growth that supports and strenghthens the rich heritage and identity, and growth that involves the people from Rotterdam in the process of change. This is essential to ensure that we are and remain an attractive city for all inhabitants. To determine direction with good growth, we use a compass with the five perspectives: compact, health, inclusive, sustainable and productive.

Building Rotterdam

In Rotterdam, construction and development are no longer undertaken blindly, but rather with a view to the future. With re-use, circularity and sustainability as high priorities. Even for sufficient and affordable housing with an ambition to build 14.000 – 16.000 new homes over the next years. The homes that are being constructed have to be attractive to all sections of the housing market.

More affordability ratio

New projects are based on a ‘more affordability’ ratio. 20% of the homes we are building will be in the social sector, 65% in the middle segment and 15% in the top segment. Developers are not just building an inclusive city; they are also focused on the sustainable aspects of their interventions. Housing associations are making plans to adapt their properties to the demand for greater sustainability and the energy transition. It’s fascinating to see so many different organisations with such diverse ways of working coming together to strive for one shared goal: an even better, more attractive, sustainable and liveable Rotterdam.

Area developments and urban projects

ou can see and hear the development of Rotterdam throughout the city. In addition to building and improving existing homes, mobility, shops, schools, office spaces and connections, we are working on major area developments and urban projects. Some intriguing examples are listed below.
