SHINE Network Launched During Immersive Tech Week 2024
From December 4th to 6th, the Immersive Tech Week took place at De Doelen in Rotterdam.
Immersive technology
Immersive technology is a collective term for technologies that immerse individuals in an experience, engaging various senses. An immersive experience transports us mentally into an alternative, digital reality. Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are examples of immersive technology. Immersive Experiences (IX) are considered one of the driving forces behind the third major digital transition, which will significantly impact our daily lives, work, learning, and leisure.
Trade show, conferences and workshops
The three days at De Doelen were all about diving into virtual worlds through a trade show, conferences, and workshops. The trade show hosted over 100 companies and international delegations from sectors such as business, art, media, entertainment, healthcare, and science. They provided insights into the latest innovations, applications, and products in XR (eXtended Reality). Visitors had the opportunity to experience firsthand how XR can enhance their businesses.
SHINE-Network
During Immersive Tech Week, the SHINE Network was also launched. The SHINE Network (South Holland Immersive Network & Ecosystem) has been established by the province of South Holand and the City of Rotterdam to connect various parties. The goal: to bring together governments, businesses, and educational institutions within this network. This collaboration aims to strengthen the region’s position to secure funding from the National Growth Fund program. These resources can then be used to finance the development of IX Labs, new knowledge and methods, professional training, and experiments for innovative IX applications.

SenseGlove
There is a lot happening in and around the city when it comes to immersive technology. The establishment of the national industry organization Dutch XR in Rotterdam and the international Immersive Tech Week confirm this. Research conducted by Birch, commissioned by the City of Rotterdam, the province of South Holland, and InnovationQuarter (IQ), also highlights that there is a relatively high concentration of startups in the Rotterdam region. Most entrepreneurs in this sector are startups.
One notable startup is SenseGlove, creators of haptic gloves. During Immersive Tech Week, it was announced that SenseGlove would move into the Katoenhuis in Rotterdam as of January 1st.
We look back on a fantastic event!
